The Canadian Food Safety and Inspection Service is proposing fines for meat processors for repeat violations of food safety laws, according to The Canadian Press.
Proposed fines, or administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) would range from $2,000 to $15,000. CFIA currently can issue written warnings for plants with food safety problems. In the most serious cases, the agency can suspend a processor's license and close a plant.
